Where to stay in Matsuyama
Matsuyama hotels & accommodations

After nearly 5 months of traveling in Japan, the Matsuyama Daiwa Roynet was the best hotel we stayed in. The design of the spacious rooms were comforting. The bathroom with separate shower, bath and toilets were especially outstanding. The staff was cheerful, courteous and helpful. With one week left to go, I doubt another hotel will equal this superb establishment.

Candeo Hotel Matsuyama is sited along the main shopping street where other hotels are sited. I've never tried them so I can't compare but I can tell you that Candeo Matsuyama is an excellent choice. The entrance is a bit hard to find. You share the same lift with the other mall guests because the hotel is only from the 5th to the 13th floor. The main lobby is on the t...

within the covered walking street with lots of food and shopping. The little things like design of the laundry facilities within the hot springs bath, complimentary noodle at night in case of hunger pangs... stayed in a few different business hotel chains on this trip and this one stands out. A 15min walk from Matsuyama Castle.

Not sure why this 'love hotel' is a third of the price of a business hotel yet gives you twice the space and many additional luxuries. Breakfast is free. Parking is free. Room's huge. Entertainment system (ok, we didn't actually test the free adult movies but the TV screen's huge and there's a jacuzzi; haven't tried the massage chair in the room either). Receptionist w...

I have stayed in many business type hotels throughout Japan. This was my favourite to date. The room was very clean, and modern. It was a good size for Japan. The staff were vert friendly and made check in and out very easy and pleasant. Finally, the location is great. You are a few minutes walk away from the Okaido shopping street which is quite popping at the week...

Well located.. I could stroll over from the Shinkansen station.. Around twenty minutes.. Google Maps..The check-in staff spoke English fluently.. All three of them.. Very helpful with information on restaurants, sightseeing etc.. THIS small town was one of the few in Japan where I didn't feel like an intruding foreigner being tolerated politely.. They made me feel like...

Located in a neighbourhood of non-descript Japanese buildings, the interior and room we had were in neat Japanese design and clean but unusually spacious. The staff was very friendly and helpful, most speak little but enough English, morning breakfast was well proportioned and good. The onsen was clean and beautifully layout with quality amenities. It takes a t...

Very consistent, APA chain of hotels usually don't give any surprises. The room was very clean with a bunch of amenities, Yukata, slippers, toiletries etc....but also tiny, which is the norm, in Japan. If you book in advance, you can get good deals. Unfortunately my airbnb host was a female crook, so I had to leave the apartment and book with APA at the last minute. It...

A fourteen-people family with elderly and children. Hotel was so considerable to ready a staff who could speak Chinese to serve our family at any time we need help. Introduced every part of facilities to us thoughtfully. The food was nice and the room was clean.

One of my favorite aspects of this trip was how Dougoya staff were so friendly and accommodating. I can't express enough that my stay in Matsuyama was beyond perfect, and mostly because this Ryokan made it so. You're in close proximity to all the Onsens in town, shopping district and great local food, plus all the temples and historical sites that are a close walk or b...

On a recent trip around Shikoku I stayed one night in the Terminal Hotel. The location was perfect. The staff were super friendly and did everything they could to assist me, providing information in English on Matsuyama, etc. The facilities suited my needs, especially the coin laundry. On the basis of my visit I will look for other Terminal Hotels when back in Japan. T...

Can’t beat this location right across from Dogo Onsen Honkan (Main Building), so easy to hop in to have a bath experience, Dogo Beer next door, hotel amenity is efficient and convenient to sleep in bed, (If you like to experience traditional ryokan style, you may book those around in this area). Japanese breakfast (included in my reservation) was served at restaurant n...

Yukai Resort Dogo was a pleasant surprise and had everything we can ask for - good location, great indoor and outdoor onsens, and great dinner and breakfast with a large variety including sashimi, which is not common in a hotel. It was also a fun dining experience especially for families with kids since it has a cotton candy machine, a mochi-making session, and pots fo...

Very welcoming host but unfortunately the accomodation was not so great. The bathroom and toilet are not heated which is really not nice in winter), the dorm is a really large room with 24 beds (male dorm at least) with a giant emergency exit panel that is working all night long (so you will never be in the dark). The bed is more like a planck with some futon on it, bu...

At first i was a little bit disappointed because the dinner didn’t served in the room coz we arrived hotel around 6:30pm. I was soooooo happy to stay here There are so many beautiful lights and interior is so impressive and moody And owner is so kind I rest really well The bed and pillow is so comfortable and room is clean also bathroom is moody and clean! I hope everybody who visits Matsuyama take really relaxful rest in Cinamon! I'll gonna stay again when I get a chance.

This hotel was in every way a positive surprise. Most hotel rooms in Japan are very small to international standards, but the rooms in this hotel are spacious. The bathroom was bigger than usual too, with a nice tub. The view of Matsuyama castle added to the pleasure of staying in this excellent hotel. The city tram stops just outside the hotel and takes you to the Dog...

I'm feeling great for the stay. The staff is very helpfull when I'm in a trouble which my luggage was left in the shuttle bus. He help me to contact the bus terminal and drive me there to get back my luggage and it's around 11 o'clock at night! God bless this hotel to be good for future.

We booked twin room and was ushered to its annex building few meters away. The twin room is real small and has a musty smell. The annex needs rejuvenation for sure. Definitely not pleasant. We decided to enquire about it’s main building as it looks new. We were told twin room only available in annex and if we want to stay in main building, we can only have double and p...

Located near the tram stop, the hotel is accessible to many of the tourist spots of Matsuyama, like Matsuyama Castle, Dogo Onsen, & Okaido Shopping Street. The double rooms are surprisingly large and comfortable all for the usual price of a small cramped single in a Japanese business hotel. The entrance lobby and overall furnishings of the hotel are up there with 4 or 5 star hotels. No complaints whatsoever.

Preface: My friends and I had a car so reaching this place with our luggage was pretty easy. I can't comment on how it is by public transport. Just because this is a "love hotel" doesn't mean you have reason to avoid it. It's incredibly cheap, the bed is probably one of the biggest you'll get in Japan, and the VOD is free! The location is a bit far from town but it's...

One of its most iconic attractions is the majestic Matsuyama Castle, a stunning hilltop fortress that dates back to the early 17th century. The castle offers panoramic views of the city and the Seto Inland Sea, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the castle grounds and learn about its rich history, including tales of samurai and ancient battles that shaped the region. The nearby Bocchan Wind Up Clock is another must-see, symbolizing the city’s connection to literature, as it was inspired by the famous novel "Bocchan" by Natsume Sōseki.
Beyond its historical sites, Matsuyama is famous for its hot springs, particularly the Dogo Onsen, one of Japan's oldest and most celebrated onsen resorts. This charming bathhouse, with its wooden architecture and soothing thermal waters, invites visitors to unwind and experience a quintessential Japanese tradition. The surrounding area is dotted with quaint shops and cafes, offering local delicacies and souvenirs. The blend of vibrant city life and serene natural surroundings makes Matsuyama a unique destination that caters to all types of travelers.

These areas provide tranquil spots for picnics and leisurely walks, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the picturesque scenery. The city’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty is evident in places like Sora to Mori and Ebara Lake, where locals and tourists alike can enjoy peaceful moments away from the bustling streets.

Phrases like “Arigatou gozaimasu” (thank you) and “Sumimasen” (excuse me) can make interactions smoother and more enjoyable.
When it comes to local customs, be respectful of traditions, especially in places like shrines and temples. Always remove your shoes before entering homes or certain establishments, and remember to bow as a sign of respect. Tipping is not customary in Japan, so simply expressing gratitude is enough. For those who enjoy culinary delights, don’t miss out on trying local specialties like Taimeshi (sea bream rice) and Kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers), which can be found in various restaurants throughout the city.
