“The Grand in June.”
You need to have an open mind when visiting this location after reading the hotel reviews. The Hotel is situated very high up on a cliff edge which is lovely if you have a sea view room, however, it doesn't look like any of the windows have been cleaned for years and the seagulls roost on all the ledges and there is bird crap everywhere, they also wake you up at about 5.00 am in the Summer months with their squawking!! The hotel is fine, very grand for its day, downstairs in the large foyer and the Restaurants they look well kept and seem to be quite clean and tidy, the sweeping staircase unfortunately is propped up by scaffolding currently, someone said it's been there for the last few months, so, I don't know exactly what they are doing to it, but, like a lot of other Hotels in the area, the Travelodge for example is right across the road, everything everywhere looks worn down and in need of a scrub up and paint, I guess the owners are more interested in making money than keeping them sparkling clean, especially, the building exteriors. My standard single room was basic, the bed was a bit hard for me, but, the shower was a walk-in type, so, no climbing in and out of a high sided bath, and I was placed on a side view looking partially out over the beach. The room was clean on arrival, but, there is no cleaner every day, only after you have departed, however, you can request extra towels, etc, if required. There is tea & coffee making facilities in the room and a small tv which was easy to use with lots of channels to choose from. The small bathroom was adequate, the shower was spot on, easy to use and the temperature control was excellent. There was an upper outside level for viewing the beach which was brilliant for photos, but, it was as windy as hell off the North Sea, so, I didn't stay up there for very long!! I booked B&B and all the food was served as a buffet style in the large well kept restaurant, I couldn't fault the basic breakfast choice on offer at all and you could have as much or as little as you wanted, the food quality wasn't exactly 5 star, but, for the quantity it was certainly adequate. I obtained evening meals for 2 nights at £17.50 a pop, again buffet style, so, you just helped yourself, a different menu every night with good choices and all the trimmings. The hotel staff throughout were superb, very professional and extremely helpful. The hotel was quite close to the railway station/bus stops for travelling on public transport and only about a 10 minute walk away, so, absolutely ideal on that score. Lots of shops and chippies and pubs, quite a large town for walking around shopping, etc, the main pedestrian thoroughfare is only a couple of streets away, so, not far to get about. You can take the funicular tram down onto the promenade from around the corner, as it is very steep if you walked down, and back up again, you need to be fit to do it every day!! There was some car parking outside the hotel, but, it fills up rapidly during the morning, a parking meter is available for use. I thought the hotel location was terrific for the beach, harbour and the town centre.
