        “Mixed Experience Overall”

The hot spring experience was a highlight, offering relaxation in a beautiful setting with stunning views. The room size was generous, providing ample space to unwind. However, cleanliness left much to be desired, and the staff could have been more attentive. Additionally, the facilities were lacking, and shopping options nearby were limited, which might not suit everyone's needs. While the location was convenient for transport, overall, improvements are needed for a better stay.

        “Very good”

The onsen was lovely, that I can confirm. But the room cleanliness and connecting toilet was not good. There was black mold everywhere around the sink, which was disappointing for how much we paid. The cancellation policy is also extremely strict, we had a friend that got influenza and we wanted to change our booking from three to two people, we gave them five days notice but it was too late.

        “Seen better days ”

This ryokan has probably seen better days but now seems destined to become one of the many abandoned buildings in the area. Old does not necessarily mean bad but this hotel I suspect has been unloved for a while. What would have been an en-suite shower room has been barred off and labelled as a store room. The room was dusty and not so much as a complementary sachet as coffee (bring a spoon if you have your hot drinks). The onsen was borderline acceptable but it did have a slimy feel to it and probably could have done with being emptied and cleaned. The handle on the door to the outside onsen was broken and sliced the tips of my fingers. I managed to get to a sink without bleeding everywhere and reported the problem in Japanese to the owner. The following day it still had not been fixed or made safe. I dread to think how many people had cut themselves on it before me. When I finally made it to the outside onsen (with my plastered up finger tips), it was cold! The onsen is also only open between 6pm and 9pm! The impression is that this hotel is run by doing the bare minimum. Would I stay here again? Probably not. Was it worth ¥***a night for 2 people? We have been extensively travelling in Japan for many years and stayed in some wonderful places for similar prices. In terms of food, this town has very few restaurants open in the evening and almost everything was closed on a Wednesday. I suspect the place is being kept alive as a stopover for visitors to Nikko. The whole area would still be a lovely spa town if they removed the abandoned old buildings and maintained the nice ones that are left. There’s definitely a feeling that the glory days of this area have long passed.
