Kinugawa hotels & places to stay

We stayed 4 nights in Kinugawa Onsen hotel. Location if quite far from major tourist attraction. But again, this place is an Onsen place. Japanese people go to Kinugawa to enjoy Onsen and have a quiet vacation. If you want a relaxing vacation and enjoy good food, I recommend this place. Breakfast and dinner are served buffet style, so you can eat your heart's delight. I personally enjoyed bluefin tuna sashimi everyday. Their steak was good and their ice cream and desserts were exceptionally delicious On our 3rd day, we were surprised we were served grilled lobsters and on the 4th day of dinner, we were served Crab sashimi. Both were so good. By the way, we celebrated my wife's birthday and the staff sang to my wife and they gave her a special gift . Well appreciated. Special mention to the restaurant staff named APRIL. She works fast and she recommended to us places to visit in Kinugawa. Very lucky to have a person working for your hotel.

We checked into the hotel quite late at night. Was kinda sad because we arrived nikko later than expected and i thought we were gonna miss the dinner.. but to our pleasant surprise the staff actually kept the food aside and set it up for us, even though it was about 2h past the stated dinner time! The traditional dinner (and breakfast too) was SO amazing - gotta try it to get the full ryokan experience!! Staff are genuinely welcoming and very very helpful. Hot spring was 10/10, as expected, we went there every. single. night. (and maybe the mornings too) It's definitely not the cheapest/ most affordable ryokan in nikko but honestly, this place is worth my every dollar spent. So damn glad we chose to stay here - highly recommended for those visiting nikko, especially if it's your first ryokan stay.

This hotel is superb, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is located in Kinugawa-onsen area which is very close to the Kinugawa-onsen station (walking distant), and the hotel is situated by the river. It is super relaxing here, very tranquil. The rooms were spacious, clean, most enjoyable. Staff are very friendly. The onsen are definitely one of the best, the hotel also provide free parking space. The food is amazing.

Very conveniently located just 3 mins walk from the Kinugawa-Koen station. Lovely outdoor onsen on the premises. Beautiful koi pond garden set a little way in from the river. Very elaborate dinner and breakfast, which I struggled a little with as I was not sure what was food and what was ornament & also what goes with what but I muddled through it and it was an interesting experience, including dining in my Japanese robe ( yutaka) - didn’t realise I had to put the thicker ornate jacket over the yutaka, so I felt a little under-dressed. Very minimal English is spoken but the staff are very friendly & forgiving of my slip ups. The one thing I was a little disappointed about was the early check out at 10am & that they would not allow me to use the onsen after I checked out. Otherwise a very comfortable stay

Great Onsen. I think this is the best onsen view in Kinugawa Onsen area. In daylight the view is great. But at night the view is better as they use spotlights to highlight nature around the onsen. The spotlights create a serene effect showing old beautiful trees along the river. No other hotels does this in Kinugawa. The good part is the onsen is open all night (If I remember correctly it is only closed for cleaning 9am - 1pm , Nature lights are until 11pm). Plus the staff are really warm and kind. For the room, we reserved a shared toilet and bath, but to our surprise the room had its own separate toilet and bath. So I think shared toilet and bath in Agoda description refers to the onsen. This hotel is one of large ryokan complex built in the past decade so it is highly probable that each room has its own toilet and bath . Highly unlikely that it is like a capsule hotel an guest house with shared bath and toilet. (I maybe wrong).

I love it! The staff are so nice. They cannot speak English but they tried so hard to communicate with us. He take us to the lobby and the common area, and tell us what we can do in the hotel. The room is very big. I thought it would be the small one from the picture I saw form somewhere but I was surprised after entering the room LOL Worth our money! The location was actually far from Kinugawa Onsen Station but the view at the bridge was priceless! only around 10-15 mins walk (don't trust google map .. just walk to the alley on the left of the convenience store "Rainbow," then turn left and walk until you see 7-11. After that, turn right and walk along the bridge and you'll see the tall building and that's it! :D

Owner was very nice. Location was good. Got free parking although we need to park our car next few streets however the staff will drive you back to the hotel. Room is clean. However, when we booked this ryokan, it didn't mention it was a shared bathroom room. So we didn't have our own bathroom. Fortunately, since it has an onsen, so we don't mind to take showers at the onsen.

We took the train from nikko to the stop before kinugawa onsen and then walked.l the 17 minutes to the ryokan. The staff were incredibly nice and got us checked in immediately. We booked the room with the bath on the balcony and it was amazing. We went to the nearby convenience store for some sake and enjoyed the bath while listening to the river. The water was almost scalding which made it a bit hard to enjoy fully but it was still a treat and necessary since my girlfriend has tattoos which prohibits her from most public onsen. Once we bathed we changed into our yukata with the help of the older lady. She also serves us our hikari which was amazing. She was so sweet and honestly the reason this place deserves all 5 stars. She helped show us how to do everything and was very kind. While sleeping on the ground ryokan style isn't really for me, if I'm ever back in the region I'll definitely stay again.

I thoroughly enjoy my short stay there. The hotel is obviously a very old one but its neat and functional The staff were helpful and make the stay pleasant. There was evening entertainment at the lobby area in the evening which was great for kids and young families. We had the dinner and breakfast package and enjoy the variety of Japanese food which we would not normally have tried in Japanese restaurants in malls around the world. Travelling from Tokyo it was a far with a no of train changes and a long walk from the nearest station to the hotel. There are bus services available which we took on the return leg. Pls enquire about this.

I loved this place and I will tell you why. It took about 10 min walking from Kinugawa Onsen Station. Along the way there were many sakura trees and my group stopped by several time taking photos. When I arrived, the staffs were lively and friendly helped me carrying my bags. In the room, there were welcome cookies for my group and after dinner new welcome cookies were there. The facilities were in good condition. Onsens had best view of the river. Dinner and breakfast were extremely well prepared. You would love and enjoy having them. After checking out, I received a box of cookie and souvenirs. The staffs waving at us until loose sight. I would greatly recommend to all you guys this place with special experience in onsen and Japanese style ryokan and hospitality.

Stayed at Japanese room, great Japanese room experience. Enough space for 4 adults + 2 children. Room very clean, excellent staffs performance/services (but not sure if you can’t speak/read Japanese-I went to Japan’s Uni so Japanese Language is not a problem to me). Japanese Breakfast & dinner are great “Japanese” experience too. Location a bit off the main extractions of Nikko but within walking distance from Kinugawa Onsen Station. Went to private Onsen Room-hot spring, smaller than what I thought.... a bit disappointed paying additional for that kind of setup.

Loved our weekend there! The breakfasts and dinner provided as part of the rate was exceptional!!! The staff went out of their way to help us with everything (including driving us to get some tour tickets without us asking!). The onsen was well equipped and we loved the one outside facing the river. The hotel itself is very near the Kinugawa Onsen station (express train from Asakusa, ~2hours), however it is about 40mins away from the Nikko tourist sites but it's easy to get a bus there. We preferred this area as it is less touristy compared to the areas closer to the tourist attractions.

Hotel Manyoutei is a great experience for anyone looking for a traditional Japanese experience at a ryokan. It's about a 30 minute walk from the Kinugawa Onsen station, so you might want to take a bus if you have a lot of luggage. I don't speak any Japanese, but the staff at the train station and hotel were very accommodating. I was able to check in a little bit earlier and got a chance to explore the area. The best part of the hotel is the traditional dinner and breakfast that you can have. I stayed in a Japanese style room, and the futon was more comfortable than I expected. It was nice having the sound of the river outside the window too. The onsen was okay, but I'd recommend trying out one of the public onsen that you can visit around town.

I find this hotel good value for money. To reach this hotel, one has to take a bus from the Kinugawa Train Station for about 5 minutes ride - drop off in front of the hotel. Not many shops near the this hotel. Hotel is small, only 3 storey, ground floor is reception and restaurant, only a few rooms on 2nd and 3rd floors. My room is Japanese style, cosy and well-equipped, no ensuite bathroom. Share toilet on each floor. Hotel has a very nice onsen on ground floor which I used before dinner and breakfast. Breakfast and dinner are delicious Japanese food - exactly like what I saw on the TV documentary show Japan Hours! The hotel staff are friendly, especially the owner who speaks good English. He called the bus for me on my check-out day!

enjoyed the private onsen. This town is very small with only a handful of restaurants located to the left of the hotel and most close early! Supposedly good skiing nearby so I would like to come back here. Also need to check out Edo wonderland which is a short bus ride away. If you want to explore Nikko, I advise against coming here on a Japanese holiday weekend. The traffic was horrible so we chose not to take the bus to Chozenji lake/Kegan falls. Also way too many people at Toshogu shrine.

This was a last minute find for me and my wife. We actually had already gone on a daytrip to Nikko the week before but we wanted to go back. So we got to searching and we're delighted to find Livemax Resort. Its location is just beautiful just beside the Kinugawa river. Very peaceful and quiet. There are trails that you can hike nearby. The best part is you also have your own hot tub in your room(actually, in the balcony). It was great value for money.

We stayed at the Ryokan for one night in a traditional Japanese double room. The room was big and beautiful, the futon beds were really comfortable. We went to the Onsen around 9pm and had them for ourselves for most of the time. Especially the outdoor onsen is amazing, we had a great time relaxing there after a day in Nikko. It takes about 45 minutes to go to the Ryokan from Nikko Tobu Station, the hotel is about 5Minutes walking distance from the train-station. We would definitely recommend the Ryokan!

The location of the hotel from the station is pretty far. I got off at the kinugawa onsen station and it's a 17mim walk because google maps wasn't showing any transportation for us to use to get there. I'm sure there was one as there were buses near the station just couldn't bother to seek it because of language barrier. It was a nice walk anyways as I saw many nice little restaurants, sceneries and cool art. I read a previous review just before coming and was scared to see if it was true about the mold but it wasn't that bad. Overall the place was very tidy. The bricks on the outside are moldy but you don't see that very much. The front doors look newly built and nice. I also read another review saying this place doesn't allow tattoos for onsen unless it's for private room ones but when we asked the staff if it was they said you can use it if there are a few guests in the onsen. I recommend going at midnight or 11pm to see less people. Room thermostat says AC but is actually the heat.

Our stay in Hotel Sunshine Kinugawa was better than expected. We enjoyed mostly the splendid view of Kinugawa River by the Ryokan's balcony and the onsen facility which opens from 5am to 12am local time. We were also surprised that food is buffet-style for both breakfast and dinner so we had our tummy full without having to binge eating in the middle of the night! Staff were very friendly and helpful to us. For further info, there is a bus that brings you from Kinugawa Onsen station directly to the hotel for those who cannot walk. There is a free shuttle bus service however during checkout (from hotel to the train station) which needs to be arranged upon check in. There is also a family run ramen stall across the road and a mart which opens till 7pm right next door which makes it so convenient. The hotel may be a little old however it does provide an authentic traditional Japanese feel and overall it was a great experience for my family & very much value for money!

The place was good to stay at, quiet at night. Room was clean, heaps of parking, although the driveway was a bit hard to find. Staff are friendly! There is a supermarket within 200metres, and there is good cooking facilities. The outside of the building are a bit tired - bu that did not impact on our stay at all! It takes about 20 minutes to drive from Nikko station.
