Nice experience on budget”

I was looking for a ryokan with private baths because me and my husband have tattoos. Then I found this one that has a private one for "family" and then after 9pm the public ones can be locked and used as private. It was a very nice experience because we tried an indoor and a outdoor bath. They even have a ashiyu (the foot bath) outside. Is not at the center of Kusatsu, but is only 10 minutes walking so it was ok. There's a Lawson very close, and you can get ice cream and coffee for free at the ryokan. They also provide the yukata that you can use inside and outside. The room was very clean and nice. It was really worthy for the price.

Nice Ryokan with friendly staff”

The location is not in center of Kusatsu Town. But just 10min walking. And 5 mins to nearest public onsen. The room I stayed is Traditional Japanese which is nice and not old. The Onsen are a bit small and not fancy. Dinner and breakfast are kaiseki and it was nice.

Poor service and dirty ryokan”

We loved the ryokan at first sight while viewing it but was greeted with 2 events that left our experience wanting. Check-in was 3pm and we arrived at 2.30pm. We parked our car and was about to head over when one of the service staff came over to tell us we can't enter (yups, not even put our bags down at the reception or wait there) until it is 3pm. It was cold, and we ended up waiting in the car for 30 mins. The onsen experience was amazing until my friend and I broke out in red rash around our body (neck, legs, etc.). Some parts even bled. After doing research online, we realised a certain bacteria thrives in onsens when not cleaned properly, and that onsen definitely wasn't clean. There was green algae near the stones where the water was coming out from. While most onsens are perfect for the skin, this one kills it. Would not recommend this place to anybody. Worst place I have stayed in awhile.
