I didn’t feel welcome in this hotel as a single woman traveler”

I stayed for 3 nights at this hotel. I will expose the pros and cons of my experience: Pros: Onsen baths are very good and accept tattoos. Be careful as it may be very crowded from 9pm until 10.30pm. Kusatsu is a very touristy. Locations is great, only 5mn away from the Yubatake by walk. Very close to the main streets too. Japanese traditional room is cute even though the cleanliness is definitely not the best (I found hair in the bathtub, the carpet were stained, as well as the ceiling). Cons (there are a lot): Japanese senior man staff was not friendly at all with me. He was cold and inattentive to my requests. For example, I requested if I could order dinner at my room when I checked in and he simply refused without explaining why. Strange way of dealing with customers. On the contrary, his colleague (foreigner) was more attentive and helpful with my requests (he helped me send my luggage with Yamato for example). You have to pay a fee of 2200 ¥ for the private onsen and you can only use it for 50mn, not even a full hour. The WIFI was NOT WORKING! How is this possible for a 3 star hotel? There was no apology about this either and no explanation was given. I noticed the wifi was not working in my room as soon as I checked in and thought the issue may have been on my side but no! I found out because I had read a written sign inside the elevator in Japanese with the word “wifi” in it. I decided to take a picture of it in order to Google translate it and it said the wifi was not working because of some kind of maintenance…. I had to go in the lobby every time I had to use the internet… Last but not least, there are either spiders or fleas or some other kind of insects that bit my arm, ear and shoulder after sleeping on the futon and pillow on the 2nd night. It really was the worst for me because now my whole left arm is swollen which is having an allergic reaction. Please for the sake of your guests, change the bedding, sheets and pillow because this is cle

Spoilt toilet, couldn't fix during our stay”

Negatives After one use of the bathroom, the flush handle snapped and we had to request the staff to fix it. However, the staff didn't manage to fix it so the bathroom remained spoilt. Luckily we were there for one night only so we used public toilets. The overall hotel and rooms are dated, slightly old. The onsen is one of the oldest I've been to. There's no towel in the onsen so you need to bring your own from the room. There was only one key given so if you're going out for onsen bath it is slightly inconvenient. Positives Staff were extremely helpful with our luggages, and were super friendly (it's Japan!) The futon mat was comfortable and place was spacious to stay in. They even had shuttle buses to Kusatau bus terminal which was helpful and much needed!

Reasonable price”

I traveled with my friend and booked this room the night right before my trip. The price is reasonable for the location. There’s also a free onsen in the hotel with we haven’t tried it. The hotel provided us yukatas and many other amenities. You can also store your luggage at the reception and borrow umbrellas after checking out for free. The room is a little old and the heater is a bit loud but we are deep sleepers so it didn’t affect us that much. The reception staff is fluent is English so that’s a plus.

Value for money”

Helpful staff even if my Japanese was limited. Outdoor bath was nice especially while it was snowing! If you book the room with dinner, it's a kaiseki style dinner which was great! Breakfast was so-so though. 5 mins walk to Yubatake so good location. Room is a bit old but clean. Overall I recommend this place!
