Amazing Ryokan and Onsen Experience, Great Location!”

I cannot stress enough how much I recommend staying at Nikko Senhime Monogatari if you plan on visiting Nikko Japan! While a bit more expensive than some other options in the area, the overall experience makes it all worth it. The location is great as it is only a short bus ride from Tobu-Nikko train station. It is located near Central Nikko and is a short walk to the major shrines / temples in the area. If you plan on traveling deeper into Nikko National Park for sight-seeing and experiencing the waterfalls/nature, it is approximately 30-60 minutes local bus ride away. However, the bus is easy to navigate and we felt it was better to settle close to the train station to drop off our luggage instead of having to navigate the local bus deep into the mountain (with our luggage) to get to another hotel. We went during busy season as the leaves were just changing colors, so the local bus heading into the mountain was quite busy and we sometimes had to wait for the second scheduled bus (they come about every 20-30 minutes but can be late due to influx of travelers). The ryokan itself is very well maintained and clean - you can tell they take pride in upkeeping the premises. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, and they are able to communicate with you in English (for non-Japanese speakers) to make sure check-in is smooth. While being shown to our rooms, the staff also helped explain how everything works at the ryokan to ensure your stay is pleasant. We booked the Japanese style room with open air bath for two nights. The room was very clean, quiet and spacious, and the tatami mats were comfortable to sleep on. Our package included kaiseki style breakfast and dinner for both days where we were given a private room on the 2nd floor for meals throughout the duration of our stay. The multi-course meals were fresh and exquisite, and in fact in was so much food that we could barely finish each meal. The shared onsen on the 1st floor was very well maintained, clean

Perfect customer care, pleasant stay”

We were warmly welcomed with matcha and sweets, by non-Japanese staff speaking perfect English. The hotel facilities are modest and a bit worn out but all in perfect working conditions and very clean. Kaiseki dinner was great, as well as the breakfast, the only problem being bit too much to eat for us. The location is great for those who want to visit the shrines. All the staff (Japanese and non Japanese) were super helpful and kind. We especially appreciated the hotel hiring immigrants.

Very enjoyable two day stay”

Had a hunch one day was not going to be long enough, and that was so true. Very convenient location. Many worthwhile sights within walking distance. We had our meals at the ryokan and they were thoughtfully prepared. The outdoor onsen is very nice. The staff is great. I’ve never seen people working so hard to make our stay perfect. We didn’t even have to ask for things; in fact most of the time we found ourselves saying we were fine so the staff didn’t feel compelled to keep working. This was a first rate experience throughout. Very authentic experience.

Great location in the heart of Nikko”

We stayed for two nights there. The location. Is really good, walking distance to the Nikko center. The room is spacious, but a bit old with a cigarette smell (now I think they ban smoking inside already). The Onsen is really nice with many pools to try. The best part is the dinner that we had every night. It’s one of the best Japanese food ever.

Good location as base to explore heritage sites”

Very clean room with beautiful view. Fantastic location to walk to the abyss , bridge and the heritage’s temples. Good onsen facilities with yukata of different designs to choose from for the ladies. Japanese dinner and breakfast spread were sumptuous and served in private room. Free live pianist’s performance to chill after dinner.
