It was a very pleasant trip!”

I was really looking forward to staying in a Japanese-style room with my boyfriend for the first time! After reading other reviews, I was planning to park at a nearby parking lot because they mentioned something about the hotel's parking, but there wasn't one nearby, so we just parked at the hotel's parking lot. Nothing happened like what was written in the reviews, so we felt relieved! The view from the room, the bath, and the room itself were all very beautiful and exciting! My boyfriend and I were glad we chose this place! We would love to come back here when we visit Kinugawa again! Thank you very much!

Place to wind down, enjoy the onsen, the riverview, and the food”

Kinugawa Onsen used to be the place to be ‘at’ a while ago but now it’s fighting the decay of a city that should have much more going for it. If you’re in for excitement on the town, lots of restaurant and shops, you won’t get that here. What you do get is a gem for people looking for quiet, beauty of nature, and plenty of onsen. Now about the hotel: the rooms are updated and very comfortable ,offering a river view, amenities in the room ( like a kettle for your green tea and bathroom stuff), seating area, good bath and bathroom, fridge and locker, plus your Yukata and towels for the onsen experience. I had the deal with breakfast and dinner and my recom is that you take that as you rarely get such good Japanese meal sets that leave you without the need for lunch, if you’re a normal eater. Do talk to them beforehand about allergies as these meals are complicated traditional Japanese recipes. I was the only foreigner there and the staff were very nice and helpful, but a Google translate app comes in handy. What I would return to this hotel for is the food, the onsen (separated male/female as per usual ; hot inside- and outside bath, outside cold bath and a sauna - and the tranquility of the town. If you want more to do and see, go to Nikko which is only a short train ride away. Kinugawa Onsen town is missing out on the chance of getting the tourists (and I also mean Japanese tourists) back in, but that’s not my business. Nearby Kinugawa onsen are a few places to visit - I did Edo Wonderland and despite its uninviting name, I absolutely loved the day I had out there. Note: this hotel is on the side of the river that requires you to walk ‘down’ so on foot you need to go down a 100 steps to get to a bridge. If you’re disabled, I don’t know what the alternative is, apart from taking a taxi.

Amazing getaway from the city”

Value is amazing for what you get. Dinner and breakfast are delicious and changes every day. Room is spacious with a beautiful view. Staff are friendly and the outdoor onsen is refreshing. Only slight annoyance is the 20 minute walk to the station (and no other forms of transit?) but at the same time it affords it a beautiful view of the lake.

I can’t say many good things…”

Unfortunately, I didn’t see many good sides during my stay at this place: Pluses: - the onsen temperature was great, not too hot, not too cold, very pleasant, - the view was very pretty, there was some construction going on on the other side of the river that was quite inconvenient but the view of the river was beautiful, - the dinner was quite tasty and big, worth it’s price, Minuses: - the bed was quite hard, possibly no different from a futon (which due to my health condition I avoid), - no wifi on higher floors and when asked about it they just said it depends on the place (no solution provided whatsoever even though it’s advertised that there is free wifi in rooms), - the room bathroom was not very clean, there were black hair on the floor, - it says there is a heater but there wasn’t, there was only AC which is barely sufficient in winter/early spring, - onsen was good but pretty run down, - the outside looks very neat but the front is a poor attempt at European design, it looks quite kitsch, - the staff is supposedly multilingual, but it doesn’t seem like they can communicate well in Japanese nor English (I have reserved breakfast but apparently the staff didn’t understand and I didn’t get to eat one, they weren’t willing to admit the mistake and offer any compensation), - my room was supposed to be a quiet room, but the whole day you could hear the train sounds and the people in adjacent rooms being very loud till late night hours (2AM), - the is no option to sit outside, no available terrace or balcony; the only place is either open bath or smoking area. I’m rather a quiet and non-confrontational person so I wasn’t pushy about getting any compensations for all the inconveniences but I’ve been living in Japan and traveling to similar places plenty of times and would simply expect something more… I certainly don’t plan to visit again.
