“A Shameful Display of Hospitality – Never Returning to Sheraton ECR, Mahabalipuram”
As someone who works in the hospitality industry, I know how challenging it is to run a full property on a busy weekend. But Sheraton Grand on ECR Road, Mahabalipuram has single-handedly redefined what indifference, mismanagement, and complete lack of guest empathy looks like — all under the guise of a premium resort experience. What was meant to be a quiet weekend getaway for my wife and me turned into an absolute disaster. We arrived at 2:20 PM on a Sunday, to a chaotic front desk. After waiting, we were met by an attendant named Shriya, who confirmed check-in was at 3 PM and that we’d be called once our room was ready. I appreciated the clarity and asked her when the Sunday brunch would end, so we could grab a bite before our room was ready. She confidently said 3 PM. Rushing to the restaurant, we thankfully got a table despite the crowd, and began eating, only to be told by the restaurant staff that brunch actually ends at 4 PM. Not a major issue on its own, but this marked the beginning of a weekend of constant misinformation. The restaurant AC was barely functioning, and the staff simply shrugged and blamed it on the number of people present. I met a former acquaintance, Ajilesh, now the F&B Director, who was warm and helpful in suggesting items from the buffet — one of the few silver linings. By 3:45 PM, no one from the front desk had called us. So we walked back, found Shriya, and were told our room was ready. Why the promised call was never made is still a mystery. Still, we brushed it off. Up until then, all these issues were pardonable. But what happened next was beyond appalling. At 5 PM, we decided to spend time by the beach. It was crowded, but the staff arranged a couple of chairs for us and served us drinks from the bar. We asked for an additional chair to place our drinks, which they kindly provided. Moments later, a random guest approached, asked if the third chair was taken, and before we could process it, he threw our drinks to the sand and yanked the chair away. I chose not to escalate it immediately and waited for a manager. The banquets manager, informed by beach staff, came over. My friend Ajilesh also arrived. When I explained the incident and requested a simple apology from the guest — not for me, but for my wife, whose comfort had been insulted — I was stunned by the response. Ajilesh, someone I’ve known professionally, casually dismissed it saying, "Macha leave it da, don’t make a big deal out of this." He even implied I had partly provoked the guest. This wasn’t damage control — it was a blatant display of protecting a rude guest over a paying one. Even the head of security, Mr. Raja, promised to check the footage but never returned. After an hour, the guest left without any consequence. All I asked was a basic human courtesy — an apology. Come morning, I asked Guest Relations for the breakfast buffet timing — they said 10 AM, only for me to find out later it was open till 11 AM. Another instance of sheer cluelessness. I had also requested a late check-out of 2 PM at check-in, which Shriya acknowledged in writing. Yet at 12 PM, I received a curt call from Guest Relations asking when I’d check out because the room needed to be cleaned. I responded firmly, reiterating my 2 PM request. At checkout, Malika, the so-called head of Guest Loyalty, didn't even ask me how my stay was — a fitting end to a weekend of negligence. Either she’s untrained, overwhelmed, or just indifferent — but either way, she symbolized the rot within this property’s customer service. Final Thoughts: This property doesn’t understand what it means to care for guests. It operates purely for revenue churn, shoving in as many guests as possible without ensuring even the bare minimum standards of hospitality.
