Newer ryokan with traditional feel”

Tokinoniwa provided great value and wonderful service. Every room has a private outdoor bathtub that was easy to use and made for a wonderfully relaxing evening. The bed was super comfortable and spacious (we had a king sized). The room was also comfortable with places to sit, watch TV, etc. The bathroom had a great shower. We were the only western foreigners (that we saw) during our stay. Between our broken, minimal Japanese and the staff being patient, we had a wonderful time. The kaiseki dinners were very impressive, taking usually 1-2 hours. Dinner is served at either 5:30 or 8:00pm in the dining room. Breakfast was served 7:00-9:00am with a choice between western or Japanese style meals. Seating in the dining room was either chairs at tables, or sitting on tatami floors with wells for feet under the table. There is also the option to select different pillows and multiple sizes of yukata on your way to your room. As a size 22-24 woman, I was not able to fit into the pyjamas or yukata but was able to be in my own clothes throughout my stay. Parking was also very easy. There is also a shuttle into the main area of Kusatsu (the yubatake area). This was our first time at a ryokan Onsen. I think that we would have been able to enjoy it even more if we knew more Japanese, and had a bit more experience with ryokans before we went. All in all, an unforgettable stay!

Beautiful Ryokan”

Tokinoniwa is a traditional hot-springs bath ryokan in Kusatsu, Gunma prefecture. It is about a ten to fifteen minute walk away from the Kusatsu town centre and bus terminal, which is where you will generally find yourself when you arrive in Kusatsu. There is also a convenient shuttle bus service which departs from and arrives at the bus terminal several times a day. It can be a bit difficult to find the bus schedule as the ryokan does not seem to have a website, but you can identify the bus by its white colour and a black banner across the side with Japanese Kanji characters. The cost to stay can be considered pricey, as it is charged per person, not per room. However I personally believe it is worth the price as breakfast and dinner are both included, as is the use of the baths and other facilities. This is not a hotel you leave for the day and then come back to just to sleep. The idea is that you will want to stay in the ryokan the whole time you are there, wandering around the gardens and halls in the provided jinbei (Japanese pyjamas/lounge-wear), or yukata, soaking in the many different public and private baths, relaxing in the lounges and just generally letting your worries melt away. You can of course pop out to the town using the aforementioned shuttle bus (or go for a walk if you want to explore the surrounding area as well) and check out the Yubatake where the volcanic hot springs water is run across wooden channels to cool, or shop for souvenirs (like the local mascot Gunma-chan), but don't forget to enjoy the ryokan! The room was immaculate and gave us exactly the ryokan experience we were hoping for. I highly recommend the Japanese rooms with or without private bath on the balcony (there are plenty of public baths and three private baths you can use as you wish with your partner). The room included private shower, twin beds (sort of a cross between a futon and a western-style bed as the mattress was on the tatami floor, but thicker than a usual futon), as well as things like a hand-cranked grinder for making pour-over coffee, and a Japanese tea set. The bath facilities are amazing. There are two public bath facilities per gender, and the male/female facilities are switched over once per day after cleaning, so you can use all of the public baths if you choose to. Each of the public bath facilities has between 7~10 baths with hot, cold, sulfurous (piped through from the Yubatake at the centre of town) or clear water. There are also three private baths with different themes (wooden tub, rock, etc) that will make you feel like you've travelled back in time to ancient Japan. You can use these private baths with your partner, with friends, or alone whenever you wish as long as they are available (you can tell if they are available as the light in on the panel in the hallway will be turned on if it is in use i.e. the door to the bath room is locked from the inside). Breakfast and dinner are gourmet Japanese fare featuring lots of sashimi, grilled fish and self-cooked sukiyaki/barbeque. Meals are served in the dining room, where you sit at your table in its own private, self-contained booth. Staff serve you each course (8-10 per meal!) in the private room. The staff were great, with that signature Japanese service. Most of the staff we spoke to made an effort to speak a little English if they could, but it always helps to try to speak a bit of Japanese if possible and you will be met with smiles and appreciation for the effort. Only thing I'll mention is that Kusatsu is a pain to get to from Tokyo. One option is to book a seat on the express bus through the kousoku bus website. The bus leaves from the Shinjuku station bus terminal and arrives at the Kusatsu bus terminal, taking about 4 hours each way. If you want to take this bus BOOK IN ADVANCE as soon as possible as there are limited services and they WILL book out. The next best option is to take the limited express train from Ueno station, which has I think t

Exceptional”

The hotel facilities were excellent. The rooms were beyond my expectations. We have stayed at many onsen ryokans including in Hakone and Noboribetsu and this was the most beautiful. The room was very clean and the in room bathroom and open air bath were amazing. The included breakfast and dinner were both very delicious as well. The staff were all very courteous and all spoke English.

Beautiful Ryokan with private onsen”

We booked one night here and it was definitely such a good experience. The staff was very helpful (minimal english but we got by) and even transported our luggage to our room when they saw how many bags we had! The onsen was SOO good, we had a room with a private one which needed to be filled up via a button (took maybe 30 minutes to fill it enough for 2 people to hop in). We had complimentary dinner and breakfast which was suuper filling. Since we came during autumn season, they had switched off the aircon mode so it was very warm in the room (we just opened the balcony door slightly so fresh cold air could come in). Definitely worth the money spent for this experience!
