The best hotels in Takayama, Japan.”

I had a relaxing time amidst the harmony of nature. The view of the forest and river from the lodging's large windows brought me peace of mind. I spent a happy time enjoying traditional Japanese accommodation and meals. After checking in, I was able to enjoy free sake until 6 PM. The kaiseki meal came out in courses, and each dish was excellent. After finishing the kaiseki, when I returned to my room, there was a comforter laid out almost like a mattress. It was so cozy and warm that I slept very well. Above all, the onsen and service were exceptional. The onsen for the evening and the one for the morning are different. Both onsens are private, making it feel like we were the only ones using the large communal bath, which was wonderful. The mountain view was particularly artistic. The service was truly remarkable, providing a very luxurious hotel experience. Though it takes about 20 minutes by car from Takayama Station, it was not a big problem as they provided a shuttle bus. I highly recommend this hotel as it was excellent in many aspects!

I recently stayed at Wanosato, a traditional Japanese ryokan in Takayama. It’s a fantastic place to experience Japanese culture. We were picked up from Takayama Station (west exit) and welcomed with tea on the first floor. The staff helped with our luggage, though I personally didn’t mind handling it myself. I noticed some reviews complained about not getting help with luggage, but I think that’s being overly picky. Dinner was excellent, followed by a relaxing onsen session and a memorable evening enjoying sake by the irori (a traditional Japanese sunken hearth with a wood-burning fire). One of the staff members, an older gentleman, entertained us with some tricks by the fire. The next morning, we enjoyed another onsen session, had breakfast, and then headed back to Takayama. A few points for others: • The ryokan is located near a river in the forest, offering beautiful, peaceful surroundings. It’s perfect for outdoor and nature lovers. However, if you’re a city person who’s not fond of insects or the smell of wood smoke, this might not be the place for you. Just to note, there were no insects inside the hotel itself, but you might encounter some in the forest outside. • Some customers complained about staff asking if they used the minibar. This is actually to speed up your checkout. When you have breakfast, the staff will confirm whether you’ve used anything from the minibar, so when you check out, they already have your bill ready and don’t have to ask again. • During dinner, they also check with you about your preferred time for breakfast and whether you need a shuttle bus. These details make the service more efficient and smooth. Having a small wooden house in the European mountains myself, I understand the challenges of maintaining such a property—rain, humidity, etc. The wooden structure of Wanosato gives off a natural, earthy smell, which I really enjoyed, though some might not be as fond of it. Overall, Wanosato is a wonderful place to experience both Japanese culture and nature. The staff are incredibly friendly, always smiling, and very attentive.

    Unforgettable Ryokan Experience at Wanosato”

Wanosato Ryokan offers the ultimate ryokan experience! The fine dining dinner is exceptional, like having a high-end Japanese restaurant right inside the ryokan. The onsen experience is fantastic, with both hot and cold options, and the views from the private living room are absolutely breathtaking. The staff are incredibly well-trained, always welcoming with warm smiles. I absolutely loved every moment here and can’t recommend it enough!

The atmosphere was very nice, and I was able to relax. Thank you very much. There were many foreign guests, and after dinner, while gathering around the irori, I had the rare experience of interacting with the foreign guests who were staying with us, while being served bamboo sake by the staff. It was truly a valuable experience that I will remember. I would like to come back again.

The best ryokan I've been to so far.”

I have tried various ryokans in Japan, but this place is by far the best. It is somewhat distant from the city, but you can take a free shuttle bus at scheduled times, and the ryokan you arrive at has a very beautiful view by a quiet stream. The large public bath has designated times for communal use, and there are also private times allotted for each room. The dinner was also excellent, and although the cost of drinks is separate, they are very reasonably priced. After dinner, I was able to enjoy a pleasant time sipping hot sake served by the staff at the entrance's brazier. The only downside is that the sound of the stream can be quite loud, which may interfere with sleep, so I recommend bringing earplugs. This is a ryokan I want to keep to myself, and I will definitely come back.
